Getting the Most From an Eclipse Cruise
- Book early: there is only one August 2, 2027, and a limited number of ships in the path.
- Read the itinerary for eclipse day — at sea gives the captain freedom to chase clear skies.
- Pack certified solar viewers and a solar filter for any camera or binoculars, following NASA’s eclipse safety guidance.
- Plan photography in advance; totality passes quickly and is easy to miss behind a viewfinder.
- Expect heat: early August in the western Mediterranean is high summer.

Eclipse Cruise 2027: FAQ
When and where is the 2027 total solar eclipse?
On Monday, August 2, 2027. The path of totality crosses southern Spain and Gibraltar, northern Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt, then Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia. The longest totality, a little over six minutes, falls in Egypt near Luxor.
Is it better to see the eclipse from a ship or from land?
A ship has one big advantage: it can move. On eclipse morning the captain can steer toward clearer skies within the path. Land sites offer a stable platform for big telescopes, and the longest durations are on land in Egypt.
Do I need eclipse glasses on a ship?
Yes. Looking at the partly eclipsed sun is never safe without certified solar viewers, on land or at sea. Only during the brief total phase can you look with the naked eye. Many eclipse sailings hand out viewers; bring your own as well.
